    File for Categories (MSO 2003)

Where are the Categories in the Outlook calendar, specifically user-defined categories, stored?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

They are kept in the Registry.

The key KEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0Outlook Categories is the rather obvious location. It only exists if you have customized the list of categories. The entry named MasterList is a binary value containing the list of categories. You can export and import the Categories key. Don't try to edit the MasterList entry manually.

That's the Master List, correct? But what about any user customized lists? 'Cause I put in one (with an easily differentiated name) and it didn't show up in any search.

Re: File for Categories (MSO 2003)

When I create a custom category, it automatically appears in the Master List and in the MasterList entry in the registry.
You cannot search for custom categories in RegEdit because, as I indicated in my first reply, MasterList is a binary value. It is not a text value. But if you double click MasterList and scroll down, you should see the custom entries. An entry named Billow should be displayed as .B.i.l.l.o.w

    Hans:

So then when I import items and they show up (in their Category) as "not on the Master List" that is *only* because they weren't entered in that user's screen initially? So that, therefore, that would identify the imported items, assuming of course that the categories were unique?

I'd say it is because those categories haven't been entered in *your* Outlook.
