Time to turn OFF the Auto download and install setting .
I have been using IE 7 for some time now, BUT I would NOT want my machines tied up while they are ALL trying to download and install at the same time.

Dave,
Microsoft also has a toolkit available to disable Auto delivery download of IE7 until you are ready to do so. Still keep automatic download of other files intact.

Hi Dave, new lounger here in the UK! I have bravely downloaded IE7 and can't find how to switch off the automatic downloads bit. Don't suppose you can furnish me with a verbal map of how to do it ?
Thanks in advance - Terry B.

Re: IE7 release this month (IE7)

This scares me very very much. I have an application that is browser based used by over 2000 staff. At its current configuration it will ony work with IE6 SP1 and SP2. All PC's, or 95% of them are locked down so that installations cannot take place. Desktop teams have been warned that if any of them install IE7 without express permission of the main Development teams and Support teams they will be summararily flogged from the highest gibbet.

We have made massive attempts to our contractors and software companies to ensure that there applications are fully tested on IE7 and all necessary patches supplied to us prior to Desktop support going out so that these installations can take place. I know my application does not work with IE7 as the plank on my team who likes to have all new gadgets and software installed IE7 beta and it completely mucked up his view I think he did it to get out of his work....but he has been chastised by the bosses

I honestly think the guy is a fool as I have a series of Virtual PC's set up for this very test...he will never learn

Jerry,
See my post above.
Will avoid all but the anxious user downloading it themselves. ( manual download )

With that many desktops, an internal update server probably is the best way to keep a handle on things, rather than allowing any users to use Windows Update/Automatic Updates. (I forget the name, maybe SUS ?)

This is the way we are going with a major project just completed during a major office move where we have profile driven PC's that have a roving profile, with effectively no C: drive as we know it to install to. All changes are done on the server and at next log the profile is updated. It has been fraught with difficulties as different departments need different set ups due the the multitude of systems we have and a required

I know the discussion has been around for a while... but I saw the following article in IE7:

IE7 A Must

Is the overall feeling (here) that IE7 isn't "really" that much better to warrant an "immediate upgrade", whether manual or automatic?

I do NOT want all of my machines to be tied up downloading and installing IE7 at the same time.
I will most likely already have it installed BEFORE the "auto update: kicks in, but I like to install major updates when I am ready.

The opinion is carefully worded:

I agree that people who use IE need to start using Internet Explorer 7 immediately. Seriously, this whole IE 6 thing is getting out of hand.

Actually, if you read the quoted text that follows, this appears to be a jab at Microsoft's concern about its slipping market share.

Chuck,
So far as I'm concerned, I will most probably go with IE7. ( but on my time frame ) See <post#=605,345>post 605,345</post#>
