I can't imagine any good reason for not just installing all of these security updates. Just picking one at randon. <!mskb=923094>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 923094<!/mskb> appears to be a critical security fix.

I guess it is possible that some of them have been superseded by later patches, but this wouldn't be a problem if you just run Microsoft Update and let it install all the available critical patches.

You can find info by going to the appropriate MSKB number, for example for KB 921398, browse to

    support.microsoft.com/?:kbid=921398

For the others, simply substitute the appropriate number.

Others may disagree, but in my experience, recent patches have caused no problems, so I'd go ahead and install them.

Re: Patches and Security Updates (WinXP SP2)

I think you may be mixing comments about AU and WU.If you enable AU, automatic updates, to notify you but not download, then you will be notified about Windows as well as Office updates. It is Automatic Updates that you can set to notify, not Windows Update etc.

If you later go to the WU page, Windows Update, you will only find updates for Windows, not Office. That would explain some of the difference. If you instead use the Microsoft Update page, MU, then you will be able to check and download updates for both Windows and Office (latest version).

So, Automatic Updates and Microsoft Update, should agree about the same updates needed. From time to time it can happen though that some updates gets on one of them earlier than the other. That is rare, but can happen next after a new release. Should not be a problem later on, with older updates.

As mentioned, you can read the corresponding KB.

Very sorry but I put WU instaed of AU in my first post in error. Thanks for all the info. My main concern is that the updates are safe to download. and install.

From the ones I checked (not all, admittedly), I get the impression that they are all older updates; even if there were problems originally, they will have been corrected by now. I'd go ahead. I'm fully updated and I haven't had any problems.
