Error creating an MDE File (Access 2002 SP2)

    Hello All.,

I am getting the following message "Microsoft Access Was Unable to Create an MDE Database" when I am attempting to compile a modestly sized MS ACcess database. I am using Access 2002 with an Access 2002 database. We have Access SP2 installed. SP3 not available inhouse yet.

I have tried all of the following
    Decompiling and recompiling the database.
Creating a new MDB file and importing all the objects into it
    Compiling it from another machine.

I am aware of KB202304 however my database does not have more than about 100 objects in it so I do not think this is relevent.
Does anyone have any other ideas on what might be wrong?

    Thanks in advance
    Nathan

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

The number of TableIDs used can be far larger than the number of database objects. It depends on the complexity of the database objects too. For example, each list box and combo box with a table, query or SQL statement as row source uses a TableID.

Also see The "Can't make an MDE!" checklist.

    Nathan,

Any chance, in code, you are creating or modifying objects on the fly. For example, I have several databases where based on user selections, forms are automatically modified. I believe, in an MDE you cant import, create, modify, or rename objects such as forms, reports, etc. This may be causing your problem as the code will compile, the database compacts, but the MDE may not create. Or if the MDE creates, it will generate errors when these changes occur. Just something to think about.

I believe in Access 2002 the MDE would not create, however, in 2003 the MDE creates but doesn't function properly. (Hans, please correct me if I am wrong <img src=/S/blackteeth.gif border=0 alt=blackteeth width=20 height=20> ) HTH
    Regards,

    Gary

I don't have any experience with this, but my guess would be that if the code compiles correctly, Access would create the MDE, but a run-time error would occur when the code tried to modify and save the design of a database object.

    Hi All.,

Thanks for all the respinses. Hans, the list was spot on. Item No 16!

In plain English the issue was:
We have just started using a library MDE for all our generic inhouse code. Among other things it has a form containing the TreeView control from mso.dll the library MDE was created on a machine using MSO.dll v8.0.0.4219. I can compile my application into an MDE OK on a machine with this version of the dll, but on my machine and a couple of others using a different version, the MDE creation fails.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers
    Nathan
