    ControlTip Text Help (Access 2003)

I have a strange situation in that I can't get the ControlTip Text to display on my desktop system while it works perfectly with the same database file when I use my laptop. I have Access 2003 (with all of the latest updates according to the MS Office website) on both machines running XP Pro on both. I checked all of the Access TOOL-OPTIONS settings on both machines and they are identical.

When I hover over a control on the laptop for a second or two - up pops the "Tip" but using the exact same database file copied to my desktop I can hover for minutes and no popup tip.

    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,

Do you see tooltips in other applications on the other PC? For example, do you see a tooltip if you hover the mouse pointer over a smiley such as <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> ?

I believe that graphic card drivers could affect this as well. Updating to the latest drivers might help.

    Hans,
Thanks for jumping in. I do see other "tips" on both machines. For example the menu button tool tips work fine but I didn't see any pop-ups when hovering over your smiley on EITHER machine.

    Steve,
I thought you might have had it but no such luck. I updated my NVidia GeForce 6600 to the latest driver version but still no ScreenTip on the desktop system.

    Any other ideas?

Problems like these, where something works partly, are very hard to solve. You might check the following:

    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type regedit and press Enter or click OK.
    - Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerAdvanced
    - There should be an entry named ShowInfoTip in the right hand pane.
    - If not, select Edit | New | DWord value... and rename the new value to ShowInfoTip.
    - You can change the value of ShowInfoTip by double clicking the entry.
    - Make sure that the value is set to 1 (i.e. enable turn tooltips).
    - If you change the value, exit RegEdit and reboot or log off, then on again to make the change effective.

I checked the register as directed and there is a ShowInfo Tip set to 1 already present so that's not it.

Thanks again - boy is this stuff frustrating!

I'm out of ideas for the moment. If I find something, I'll post another reply.

Curious, what type of controls are you hovering over to cause the popup to occur. If command buttons, you may want to check to see where the focus is at. (Dont know why it would be any different) You may also want to check your VBA references / libraries to ensure they are the same on both machines.

Neat problem. The only other time I had something similar occur is from a user that was using an old front end version. They copied the current version to their desktop but their icon still pointed to the old version. You might also try compiling your code on your desktop. I have had odd things happen if the two operating system including software are not exactly the same (i.e., different libraries)

    Good luck.
    Regards,

    Gary

Re: ControlTip Text Help (Access 2003)

    Gary (and others),
Thanks for your help but the last reply (with library & VBA references) was way beyond my "pay grade". I'm new to Access and am currently taking an on-line course at the local college.

Figuring that a picture is worth a thousand words I'm attaching a simple file demonstrating my problem. It has a single 1 field / 1 record table and a simple form displaying that field. The text field value is "hello". The form sets the "ControlTip" property value for the text field to pop-up "Hello ControlTip".

When I copy the database file to my laptop and open the form and scroll my mouse over the field value "hello" the control tip pops up as it should.

When I view the same file on my desktop - no popup.

That's it as simply as I can present it. Anyone have a clue what's happening?
NOTE: I had to ZIP the file to get under the 100K Max file limitation

    Thanks again.

Re: ControlTip Text Help (Access 2003)

Puzzling. To check to see if the textbox is detecting your cursor, try the following:

    - In the form, go to design mode
    - Right click on the field1 text box
    - Go to the Event Tab
    - Click in the On Mouse Move area, select Event Procedure , then click on the three dots.
    - At your cursor, type the following MSGBOX "Mouse Move"
    - Press the X (Upper right hand corner) to exit visual basic
    - Open your form in the normal view mode
    - Move your cursor over the text box. A message box should appear.

If the message box does not appear, then something is interfering with your object. Could be another object superimposed over it.

It the message box appears, then you got me stumped. There are no other controls to worry about so I don't know why it doesnt work. You could try to go to design mode and select Format, Bring to Front, but as there are no other controls, I dont think that will help.

Good Luck. Your form works fine here.
    Regards,

    Gary

The tooltip should be displayed as it is on your laptop - and it does on my PC. At this moment, I can't think of an explanation why it isn't displayed on your desktop PC.

For the record - I followed your EVENT procedure instructions and then when I moved the mouse over the text box a dialog box popped up with the words "Mouse Move" and an OK button. So that worked and I guess that stumps everyone.

Well thanks anyway and maybe you'll think of something additional to try.

Thanks for trying - it appears to be a real strange problem!
