    Second Hard Drive

I would like to add a second hard drive to my PC to be used for storage and back up. What would I have to do to get it set up?

    Re: Second Hard Drive

Crack the case, find an empty slot, and screw it into the bracket. Depending on how many drives are in the computer, you may have to change the jumper on the drive so that it is a slave device (the second drive on the IDE cable). Once you boot into Windows, you can format it from Explorer just like you would a floppy disk. Pretty simple, really.

Depending on the size of the second HD, this article may be of interest.

    Re: Second Hard Drive

Thanks Mark and Leif for your replies. I now have the second hard drive hooked up as a slave and when I open "My Computer" I see the second hard drive listed as "Drv2_vol1[D]". If I put data on that drive will it run without an operating system on the second drive? Is the operating system on the master hard drive all that is needed? Also an odd thing has been happening that has me puzzled. Every time I click on the "My Document" icon my "A" drive (1.4 floppy disc) starts clicking away like it is looking for a floppy disc. Is there a way to stop that from happening?

    Re: Second Hard Drive

Sounds like you're good to go. Yes, your Win98 now seems to recognize the second drive, so you can do with it whatever you will, store data, etc. You can run Windows Explorer and right-click on that "new" D: drive, then select Properties if you want to change that strange label that has been assigned.

I no longer have a Win98 machine available, but to stop that floppy drive stuff, you should be able to CLEAR all recent documents from your START MENU someplace. You've probably used the floppy to load some file and now Win98 wants to look there all the time. Let us know if that doesn't work.

Sorry, I dug around and found a clip. If you right-click an empty place on the Task Bar and select Properties, then the Start Menu tab, you should see a window like the attachment.

    Re: Second Hard Drive

I am going to have to disagree with Big Al on your second problem. Where is that Icon that you are clicking on? If it is in Windows explorer or is it on your Desktop? It sounds to me like someone has either dragged the "My Documents" folder from your C: drive and dropped it on the A: drive while it had a diskette in the drive. This would have caused Windows to move the folder to the diskette, and it now thinks the folder is on a diskette in the A: drive. The second possibility is that someone has created a shortcut to a folder named "My Documents" on the A: drive. Is the Icon for a folder or for a shortcut (does it have the little arrow in the lower left corner), and where do you see and click on this Icon?

Thanks Legare for your reply. The My Document icon is on my desktop. The My Document icon on my desktop does not have the small box with the arrow in its lower left corner.

    Re: Second Hard Drive

That makes me think that your "My Documents" folder was moved to a diskette.

I don't have Win 98, so I don't know exactly how to change that without moving the folder back from the diskette if you still had the diskette. One thing you might try is to right click on the Icon on your desktop. If the popup menu has a Properties command then click on that. See if there is someplace in the resulting dialog box where it will let you change the drive where it thinks the folder is from A: to C:.

    Re: Second Hard Drive

Making my post to you, with apology to Legare for seeming contentious. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

It IS possible to have a My Documents icon on the desktop and not necessarily indicative that it has been moved to the floppy drive. Can't you open Windows Explorer (see attached from MY old Win98SE machine) to see if it shows My Documents on the C: drive?

I also don't think it would be destructive to clear the Start Menu MRU list as my suggestion pointed out. This clears only the MRU list and doesn't destroy any documents. Please let Legare and me know where you stand on this one, for the possible benefit of other Loungers.

    Re: Second Hard Drive

Can you confirm you mean "My Document" and not "My Documents"?

What happens if you put a floppy in drive A and click on the link - does it stop accessing the drive the next time after you remove it?

Re: Second Hard Drive and fix for 'My Documents'

Thank you bigaldoc, Leif, Legare and Willy for all your help. I tried everything you guys suggested and it did not correct the problem. But (by accident) I found the answer to the problem and fixed it. You said you wanted to hear it so that it could be passed on to others, well here it is. Remember my original post about adding a second hard drive; well that was part of the answer. After I installed the second hard drive for storage with no problems I created a new
