    Incorrect file load (XP Pro)

    Hi,

I've just reformatted my computer and am about done reloading the software (of course). On the last reboot I noticed that one of the file folders automatically opens up. It is not a program, just a file folder that I have saved on a a partitioned drive. It opens to show the contents. There is nothing in the start up menu that should be causing this to open. I read the help on Microsoft's website, hunted around in regedit (didn't make any changes) and didn't see where it is loading from. How do I find this and disable it?

    Thanks,
    Leesha

Hmm, that's not one of the usual ones to pop up. Have you looked at the startup folder for your own login name and for All Users (Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup)?

You can also select Start | Run..., type msconfig and press Enter. Activate the Startup tab to see which programs and processes start automatically.

    Hi Hans,

What a neat little trick! I "think" I found the item. I took the check box out and rebooted, but it rebooted with the check reinstalled. ? how I permanently remove this.

    Hi,

Just went in and tried it again. This time it seems to have stuck and I'm all set. Question - can/should I disable any of the of bothersome files that load and slow up the boot up process?

If you look at msconfig again, is the item still there, and is the check box ticked again?
If so, take a good look at the command and its location. You can make a column wider if you can't read an item completely. Which one do you think is the culprit?

You'll have to careful - there are entries in there that are essential to the running of your PC, or for its protection. Only delete an item if you're certain it's not needed. If in doubt, ask.
