Group by Last in Query Grid (2003)

I have a query based on a linked table. The idea is to select all values beginning with "ABC*" and select the last one, showing this in a form to help users identify the last number used in the sequence. Therefore I have the field under a Last Total, with the criteria "ABC*". Problem is that despite the fact that "abc196" clearly exists within the table, the query keeps showing "abc195"..... can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong??
    Thanks!

Does it work better if you use Max instead of Last?

No, it returns no value. Could it be because it's a linked table across a network??

I don't think it matters whether the table is linked or not. Try putting the criteria and the Max option in different columns - see screenshot below.
