Connect to SQL Server (Access 03) (Access 2003)

I am trying to create a link to a Microsoft SQL 2005 Express server from Access 2003. For some reason I am not able to make the connection. Attached are two screen shots. One is the error message, and the other is a capture of the connection screen that shows the connection as "not shareable". I don't know it that is related or not.

I disabled my firewall temporarily to see if that was a contirbuing factor, but the same message appears.

    Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Which protocols do you have enabled? This error normally means the odbc connection can't find it's way to the sql server. Also remember you must enable the tcp/ip and named pipes protocols for sql server 2005, as they disabled by default. Also that it installs itself as a Named Instance.

Thanks for the links. The second one didn't work (yet).
I did check, and the Server is configured for TCP/IP (see attached).

OK, let's backup a little.....are you trying to use a File Data Source or a Machine Data Source? If you're using a Machine DSN and it's what I always use, the "unshared" File DSN's won't matter. If you are tryihg to use the File DSN, then the "unshared" does become a problem as you most likely do not have permissions to access the file and therefore cannot use it.

Re: Connect to SQL Server (Access 03) (Access 2003

thanks for following up. Let me explain what I have done to date, and maybe you can get a better idea.

I loaded SQL Server 2005 Express. I have a database with tables in the database, and have modified a couple of the tables using SQL Server 2005 Express. I open an Access frontend and try to connect via:
FIle:Get External Data:Link Tables, then I select "ODBC Databases" option, I select the "Machine Data Source", and I select the "SQL Express" as the Data Source Name (which also shows the name of the database in the right column named "Description".
I then click on "OK" and it goes off for a while and ultimately returns the previously submitted error window ("Microsoft SQL Server Login" window)

I'm sure I am not doing something or have not set up something correctly, but I am a loss for what it might be.

    THANKS!
