    unfound operating system

My nephew's PC with Win 98 SE has an error message which reads "operating system not found". Has this question already been posted and answered? If so, how do I find it? If not, does this error message mean that the hard disk has to be wiped and Windows re-installed? What is the procedure to follow on this?

Boot to you Windows Startup disk and then see if there is a OS (Windows) on the hard drive. This message is saying it can NOT find any OS on the hard drive, if that is wher you are try to boot from.

You might try reinstalling Windows over it's self after you get booted up from the Start up disk.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks Dave. I'll try the Start up disk tomorrow when I go over there. I'll let you know what happens.

Problem drove me wild until I just pulled out and then replaced the C: drive IDE connector. Still have to do it again occasionally.

If that doesn't work, look in a drive C: root file called MSDOS.SYS. Make sure that the directory it says contains Windows is the one you're actually using. If not, you'll need to edit the file, remembering to remove the Read Only atrribute first.

btw if you try the previous poster's advice, he forgot to mention that you only do this with the machine disconnected frrom the power.

The first thing to do is check to see if there is a diskette in the A: drive. If there is, remove it.

There was no floppy inserted. But the Start up disk worked. Thanks Dave and all of you!
