Thanks, Alan!

Has anyone any views on the AntiSpyware component?

Good to mention Alan.

I downloaded the 7.5 when it was released, and it has been working fine for 2 days. In my case I followed the instructions at their page; downloaded the complete setup program, ran it and selected Repair installation, then when finished a reboot. Some small changes in the e-mail scanner, a nicer "Improved user interface", and several things behind the scenes:

Improved virus detection based on better heuristics and NTFS data streams scanning
Smaller installation and update files
Windows Vista ready

Hi Argus, do you prefer the new interface? For me some of the writing seemed so small as to be illegible. I tried to contact Support about it and I didn't like the fact that the new version tries to send files directly to Grisoft. 7.1 generates an email with the files attached but 7.5 didn't do this - my firewall blocked it from sending the files. I wasn't impressed with this behaviour and I'm currently using 7.1 though I suppose I will switch to 7.5 sooner or later.

Hi Chris,
Yes, I guess I like the new colours and icons in the Control Center and Test Center. No big changes, but a little different look, nonetheless.

Since I'm used to the UI, I can find my way around and I don't have to look too close. Even though I'm not that old, I from time to time have to change the size of text in my internet browser since it sometimes can be really hard to read. Are you thinking about something special in particular?

I do not know what you are referring to with "... the new version tries to send files directly to Grisoft. 7.1 generates an email with the files attached but 7.5 didn't do this - my firewall blocked it from sending the files."

I have not used the AVG anti-virus to contact GRISOFT, so maybe I've missed something.

Re: AVG Free - major updates

Hi Argus,

If I remember the new version has a status indicator top right - the next next to that is in a prominent position but very tiny. Regarding support, I had never contacted them. I noticed the information drop-down menu item and tried it. Their website still states that an email report is generated:
see http://www.grisoft.com/doc/51/lng/us/tpl/tpl01 but the new version tries to send a report directly. I think Grisoft should amend their webpage as it is incorrect. I haven't had a response from Grisoft yet though I emailed them a week ago. I should say that I'm using the paid-for network edition.

Re: AVG Free - major updates

Chris,
You are right, there is a new section called "Security status" at the top of Test Center and Control Center, and to the right in that section is an icon(?) that shows the status. The text itself in that status section is quite small, I agree. (if one double-click at the Security status section it will open the Control Center).

If the security status changes (a new update is out, or something else), then I understand that people are quite interested to read the information in that section, so it should be easy.

I see what you mean regarding support contact. I think that every application should give appropriate information so that one knows what will happen next. I can be quite picky if there is wrong information in the help files or on the web. Hope you get an answer on your questions.

Hi Argus,

Yes, I got quite put out that it did something I didn't expect and something different as described on the website. I don't like programs that attempt to phone home". Ironically. AVG was about the only program I have allowed online access to update automatically. I receive a prompt for everything else. If I hear back from Grisoft I'll let you know what they say.

Best wishes,

Chris

Re: AVG Free - major updates

Hi,

I upgraded to 7.5 when I received the upgrade notice from AVG about 20 days ago. I've been in a constant rush these days so I don't remember if I could complete an AV database update since. But the truth is now I cannot update AV definitions!
I tell AVG to update, it connects to the server, shows me there are two possible upgrade choices: Priority Update and Recommended Update. After choosing either, the status reads "closing connection", then "receiving", but nothing ever happens. Anyone been struck with this?

I checked ZoneAlarm and it's not interfering (AVG doesn't update even with ZA shut down).

As the software kept prompting me to update I got upset and uninstalled it, totally aware that it's preferable to be partially rather than completely unprotected. So at the moment I'm both trying to solve the problem and evaluating free AV alternatives. I hear recommendations.

Thanks

Sorry to say that my use of AVG 7.5 has been entirely error-free, and it updates most wonderfully...!

Good for you, John

To tell you the truth I'm reluctant to drop AVG because it has worked very well for me for about three years. What I might just try is downloading the install file from scratch from their site instead of using the one I had downloaded to upgrade from AVG 7 to AVG 7.5 as I have now.

Sounds like a sensible strategy! Now if we could simply reinstall the Universe from scratch...

Re: AVG Free - major updates

John,

I delved into the AVG Free Forum and the story had a happy ending. The following quote is from the second page in this thread:

Many AVG update problems have been attributed to a corrupted Winsock/TCP-IP stack. While you may have what appears to be normal access to the internet and email, other functions may not be working properly. To fix these types of problems, download the util mentioned below.

WinSockFix from [www.tacktech.com]

NOTE: Recent updates to some versions of Windows won't allow this util to backup the registry so ignore any errors you may get and perform the registry backup manually if needed.

I don't quite understand what WinSockFix does but it worked anyway.

Thanks!
