    mpg background, text box (2000/SP-3)

I have an mpg file I'd like to use as a background while making use of several slides of text boxes, but I'm not sure how to make it sing and dance together - any suggestions?

I don't think PowerPoint has the capability of playing a video in the background "out of the box" - by default, videos will play in the foreground.
But there is an add-in that appears to do what you want: PowerPoint Video Backgrounds. It's not cheap, though.

Your link doesn't work (at least for me, at this moment).

Re: mpg background, text box (2000/SP-3)

FWIW, an e-mailed friend found this for me:
<hr>After experimenting and also a search online I found this:

"Can I display Text Over a video Loop?"

Its not possible natively within PowerPoint. There are a couple of
    options though:
    1. You can use the Text Box control over the video. It would stay on top
of the video. For this, turn on the VBA controls toolbar by selecting
"View" | "Toolbars" | "Control Toolbox". Use the "Text Box" control from this
toolbar. (SCOTT - I TRIED THIS AND IT WORKED!!)
    2. Look at my free TransparentShow addin from
http://www.mvps.org/chirag/addins.html - it can make certain color on
the slide as transparent to enable you to see the things behind the slide
    show.
Using this, you can start the video within Windows Media Player and have
the slide show running over it using TransparentShow.

Re: mpg background, text box (2000/SP-3)

About 1: when I try this, a text box from the Control Toolbox does indeed stay on top of the video, so it works in that sense. But even if I set the BackStyle property of the text box to Transparent, the text box becomes opaque when I run the presentation. If that's OK with you, it's a simple and free solution.

Re: mpg background, text box (2000/SP-3)

Thanks for your help in this matter, Hans...I've really gotten into a new area of PPT <g>.

I've inserted the MPG movie from a file and, yes, have also found that the new text box stays on top. If I right-click the text box to select TextBox Object> Edit, I can put text in the box. A quick tap of F5 shows the movie running smoothly with a big ol' white box all over it :-(

Another R-click, Properties allows me to change the BackStyle from Opaque to Transparent; however, all that did was make the editing part transparent. I still have a big ol' white box during the Slide Show. What did I miss?

Re: mpg background, text box (2000/SP-3)

That's what I mentioned in my previous reply. There is nothing to be done about that, as fas as I know, so it is not a very attractive solution. Even if you created a small text box that leaves most of the movie visible, it looks ugly to have an opaque text box floating over it.

Have you tried your friend's add-in?

Oh...sorry for the misunderstanding. I thought I may have overlooked something.

I haven't tried the add-in yet but will give it a try soon!

Nothing like a 404 to ruin a good project, eh? :-(

Re: mpg background, text box (2000/SP-3)

Thanks, Catharine; unfortunately, I'm not experiencing any difference :-(

I do, however have an 'x' next to the TransparentShow Add-In even after changing Tools | Macro | Security... to Medium and then back to High. The 'x' seems to indicate that the Add-In is not loaded, correct?

    I also followed the Slide Show | Start Transparent Show... instructions in 16-bit to no avail...oh, well...it was a nice try <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
