Free software to increase size of 'C' partition (xp home edition)

    Hello,

I have just re-installed windows xp and found there is not enough space on my "C" drive
to install any further additional programs , as l fdisk'd the HDD incorrectly in the first
    place.
I was told that installing xp would give me the option to increase the space on the
"C" pariution on install. l think l selected the wrong option to do this and do not
know a way to increase the space on C partition with reinstalling xp.

Is there any free software that would allow me to increase the size of the "C" parition
without re-installing XP again and without wiping out any programs on my "C" parition.

    Any help would be appreciated.

There is a freeware program called Partition Resize that says it will do what you want. I have never used this, since I have Acronis Disk Director to do it for me. So I can't vouch for it's capabilities.

Check it out at RESIZE PARTITION

It's about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Re: Free software to increase size of 'C' partitio

I don't know anything about this program, Bob, but he should be careful that the description on that web page says it's a "DOS" program and if he's formatted his drive as NTFS it may not work. Note to the OP: You really would be well served to BUY a partition management program like Acronis Disk Director which WILL handle NTFS as well as DOS drives. I don't think you would regret the investment. Free is nice, but sometimes ya get what ya pays fer...

Re: Free software to increase size of 'C' partitio

If you want any advice about how big to make the C: partition when you change its size, by whatever method, I would suggest something like a minimum of 10 GB, with a practical value, allowing for growth, of 20 GB. That's assuming you put most/all of your "data" on other partition(s) and you aren't intending to upgrade to Vista on that box...

There's a school of thought that holds that you save a whole bunch of such trouble by using the entire disk as your C: drive (mine is 372 GB, RAID-1!). But others disagree...

One thing you haven't mentioned here is the size of the HD you are working with and what size the C partition is now and what size you would like it to be.
