text to column won't quite (Excel 2003sp2)

    This is driving me nuts!
    I select some data
I then use Data | Text to Column to parse it into several cells
I then select some other piece of data, copy and paste it to a different cell - totally unrelated to the previous operation.
Excel decides to parse this data also. I can't get it to just paste it into the new cell without parsing.

    Thanks,
    Thanks,

    C DeWitt

    Weird.
Do you do anything else between?

    Try the following:
    - Select the cell where you want to paste.
    - Press F2, click in the formula bar or double click the cell.
    - Press Ctrl+V to paste.
    - Press Enter or click the green checkmark button.

    Hi Chris,
I know this used to be an issue but seems to be fixed in my Excel 2002. I guess they broke it again. Another case of Excel trying to be too clever. I guess you would find that if you ran Data-Text to columns, Delimited with all the check boxes cleared, on one cell, it should reset your pasting ability.

    Catharine -

Maybe a few drag & drops but not much else. I've had this problem before though on other machines and versions of Excel so it's not just this intance.

    Thanks,

    Hans -

Yea, I discovered I could paste into the formula bar and that worked but why should it change its mode of operation and how do you get it to quite?

    Thanks,
    Thanks,

You replied to Rory but used (part of) my name.

Rory has explained how you can 'reset' the way Excel pastes:
    - Click in a non-empty cell.
    - Select Data | Text to Columns.
    - Select Delimited and click Next.
    - Clear all check boxes then click OK.
