Firefox 2 is released (Fx 2)

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a liftoff.

Firefox 2 is released.

I don't know if they like the use of links to their FTP site, anyhow it can be found there.

One can find it among latest updates at filehippo.com also, if one use or want English version:

Re: Firefox 2 is released (Fx 2)

Firefox 2 will be released tomorrow and will be available from http://www.mozilla.com/

It is best to avoid links to 3rd party sites because it can not be guaranteed what version they are supplying, many sites in the past have claimed to offer the new version of Firefox but actually supply one of the nightly builds or a release candidate that turned out not to be the final build.
You did the right thing in not posting an ftp link, Mozilla prefer that they are not posted since the official link (en-US version) will share the load amongst the different ftp sites.

Re: Firefox 2 is released (Fx 2)

Tony,
I agree completely with you. I did know that the release is coming; and with all users waiting around the world I understand that Mozilla would like to get a smooth release and update process. Maybe I got a little too happy ...

I also agree with you that I avoid 3rd party sites, with their own copies, if I can.

I should have said that I KNOW they don't like links to the FTP sites, as many others. My link to filehippo.com was more to give at least some information. I know that filehippo has been mentioned and used by some here at the Lounge.

Anyhow, I would also like to say that they are doing a great job with translations. For several releases, many language versions has been simultaneous released. Anyone who has seen the Swedish in The Muppet Show knows we need a different browser ...

I sent a heads up email to my University boss who is waiting with great excitement and this is what she said:

"Thanks. Take care - traditionally early releases in first few days can have devastating effects on windows systems - always better tested on Linux because of the geek density. "

Not quite sure what she means by "geek density" though

Pretty clear, I would have thought; Linux has denser geeks! (They have it easier...)

Well, it's been Tuesday for quite a while now but still the Mozilla homepage is showing v1.5.0.7 and Help|Check for updates is saying there's nothing new available. However, the download is available at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or...x/releases/2.0/ - although I've been holding off until the "official" release. It's looking unlikely that I'll see Firefox 2.0 before I go to bed tonight though!

Re: Firefox 2 is released (Fx 2)

It depends if you like a late night, less than 3 hours to go. It is due for release at 1am BST

I don't expect to see the update being available via "Help > Check for Updates..." for some time. There is a new update system that will be introduced in Firefox 1.5.0.8 that is specifically designed to handle major upgrades. I don't think they will offer Firefox 2 as an upgrade option for Firefox 1.5.0.7
Firefox 1.5.0.8 is due out around November 1st, even then Mozilla may wait until the first security/stability update for Firefox 2 is released before they offer it as an upgrade on Firefox 1.5.0.8 - time will tell.

Edit: They went ahead a bit early, Firefox 2 is now available on the Mozilla site

You're right - it doesn't pick it up with check for updates. I tried that and it said there were none, then immediately I went to the site and downloaded 2.0. (And hey, it checks my spelling as I type this!)

Re: Firefox 2 is released (Fx 2)

Firefox 1.5.0.8 is the next security/stability release and it is due to be released on the 1st November or thereabouts. It does contain one new feature, the minor/major software update system.

In Firefox 1.5 - 1.5.0.7 the software update system can only cope with minor updates, Firefox 1.5.0.8 will be able to cope with major updates. This software update system is similar to the one in Firefox 2.

When the update that allows users to update from Firefox 1.5.0.8 to Firefox 2 is turned on, users will be presented with a new dialog. Instead of a dialog saying "Update available" with the option to "download and install" you will get a different dialog that states "New Version Available". This dialog will give brief details about the new version and the option to never install it. If you choose to install the new version the next dialog will be the EULA that you have to accept before you can download and install the new version.

The new update system allows for users of the Firefox 1.5 series to stay on that branch and only get notified of updates to new versions of Firefox 1.5 after they specify they do not want to upgrade to Firefox 2.
