conversion of hh:mm to numbers (sp & 2003)

How can an hour :minute formated cell be converted to a decimal number? Such as, the difference between two formated hr:mm cells is 10hr:45min. is there a formula to conver that to 10.75 hrs or 645 minutes.

    Thanks

Re: conversion of hh:mm to numbers (sp & 2003)

Excel stores times internally as numbers, to be precise as a fraction of 1 day. To convert to hours, multiply with 24 (the number of hours in one day), and to convert to minutes, multiply with 1440 (=24*60, the number of minutes in a day).
Example: start time is in cell A1, end time is in cell B1.
The difference in hours is given by the formula =24*(B1-A1)
Make sure to format the cell with the formula as General, or as a number.
