Delete File via its Shortcut? (XP Pro SP2)

Hello again. I'm wondering if there is any command that can be used to delete a target file through its shortcut. I'm thinking of the situation where I open a file up via a shortcut, discover the file is out of date or generally not needed and close the the application. I'll be back to explorer. Rather than having to manually navigate to the useless file it would be great if I could kill it through the shortcut or alternatively send the shortcut to a special "PRUNE" folder and run a batchfile later to kill off all the shortcuts and their targets in the special folder.

If it's not possible to do this directly through Windows XP does anyone know of an application that does a similar job?

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Don't think so, Chris. At least I've never heard of such an animal. Either command wise or through a third party app.

Re: Delete File via its Shortcut? (XP Pro SP2)

Microsoft has been making some supplemental (technically "unsupported") utilities called PowerToys since (at least) Windows 95. There was a PowerToy called Shortcut Target Menu that added the ability to delete (among other things) the target to the right-click menu for shortcuts in Explorer, and there were versions of that PowerToy that worked in Win95 and Windows NT, but a quick Google search seemed to get me conflicting indications as to whether it would be safe to run the NT version in XP.

I emphasize that my search was "quick." If you do any exploring and get comfortable there's an XP-safe version (or a 3rd-party substitute, for that matter), please report back. The fact that there was a Windows PowerToy to do it leads me to suspect there are probably 3rd-party versions as well (especially if the Windows version won't work in XP).

Thanks for the great idea of using a Windows 95 Power Toy. Right now I'm trying out "Shortcut Target Menu" from Windows 95 Power Toys Set. I downloaded the set, created a folder called Power (as the instructions suggest) and extracted all the files. However, I'm bypassing the install.inf because I don't want the entire set. I right-clicked on target.inf and installed that. It shows up as Target Context Menu (Remove Only) in the Windows Add Or Remove Programs Menu. It adds a Target Menu option when right-clicking shortcuts. This gives various useful options including delete. It seems to work and I think is more than what I want. I tried the individual Shortcut Target Menu 1.2 from here but that doesn't give the delete option or anything very useful as far as I can tell.

I now have the tools to create shortcuts and delete old files via shortcuts when I find them. Now I just need to get down to the job of organising my shortcuts and pruning useless files. What a great place the lounge is!

Best wishes,

Chris

Just so there's no misunderstanding, when I said my quick search had yielded "conflicting indications as to whether it would be safe to run the NT version in XP," I hadn't meant to imply that I thought the Win95 version would be safe. My understanding is that most of the Win95 PowerToys are considered not suitable for running under XP. Did you find a reputable source that said the Target toy was OK for XP?

Re: Delete File via its Shortcut? (XP Pro SP2)

Thanks for the clarification. I initially found this page at Microsoft. This gave me the idea of trying out the 95 Power Toys. From my limited research I think that some of the original Power Toys are safe and some are not. Just now I found an article that i think is a good summary. It points out that:

1. Users are on their own!
2. Installing the whole bundle of Power Toys is a bad idea!
3. Some users have problems with some toys.
4. Don't use an old toy where a specific XP toy is available.

I guess I'll be using the Target Toy quite a bit in the near future. If I come across any problems I'll post back. I think it is a case of USER Needs - User Be Warned! The idea of deleting a file via its shortcut seems so intuitive and useful to me I think it should be available, so I'm willing to experiment!

Best wishes,

Chris
