    Windows Defender released

The <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> Windows Defender has finally made it out of beta. Note: the released version says it is for XP & 2003 only.

    Re: Windows Defender released

Thanks for the tip. Now installed and working. It's a shame it doesn't detect and remember previous settings though, like the time of day I had set for a daily scan. A minor niggle though.

Thanks, Joe - I presume that at some point later it would have updated itself, but better to know what is happening!

And yes, it's a pain about it changing the schedule scan time to its default - every update of the beta has always done that, and you'd think Microsoft would have noticed by now!

I have my Windows Update set to "Tell me that there are updates" and it told me last night that there was a Windows Defender" update, I let it download and install and all is.

Any reports of how Windows Defender compares with NAV 2006/2007, Kaspersky and Nod32?

    Re: Windows Defender released

It doesn't, since it is more antispyware than antivirus.

"Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive."

    John,
I think Howard is thinking of " Windows Live OneCare "

Hey Howard, do not you mean:

Any reports of how Windows Defender/Windows OneCare compares with NAV 2006/2007, Kaspersky and Nod32?

    Re: Windows Defender released

    I guess so.

I hate the overhead of Symantec products, tho NAV 2006 seems to be a big improvement over earlier versions.

Of course, I use NAV primarily because the after rebate price is so low.
