    Locking down Format Markings so they are always on (Woord 2002 SP2)

    Hi All,

    Here I am back at the well, so to speak. I have a need to set up a document(s) so that the 'Formatting Marks' is always 'ON' <img src=/S/ranton.gif border=0 alt=ranton width=66 height=37> . Is there a way to set up an existing set of documents so that the 'Formatting Marks' is always on and can not be turned off?

    This is a user-level setting, not a document-level setting. You could put code in the Document_Open event to turn on formatting marks, but the user could still turn them off, and if the user doesn't allow macros to run, it won't work.

    Hi Hans,

    Thanks for getting back to me. I don't care if they turn it off willingly I just want it there to begin with so that they see they formatting marks. This is part of the standardized documents that you helped me with previously. They need to see the Formatting Marks so that they can see what they are deleting before they delete it (if that makes sense).

    How would I go about setting the code as you indicated?

    Create a Document_Open event procedure in the ThisDocument module:

    Private Sub Document_Open()
    ActiveWindow.View.ShowAll = True
    End Sub

    If you're creating a template, also create a Document_New event procedure with the same line of code.

    Thanks Hans,

    As always you had the perfect suggesstion. I added Document_Open event and inserted the code as you suggested. I also added a MsgBox

    ActiveWindow.View.ShowAll = True
    MsgBox "The Formatting Marks are turned on, please DO NOT turn off."

    to encourage our users to leave the Formatting Marks on.

    Thanks again Hans for your ready help.

    Of course, if they still cause me trouble I am sure there is probably a way to hide the "Show/Hide" button. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    There is, but they could also select Tools | Options... and clear the "All" check box in the View tab. Your users won't be grateful if you take away Tools | Options...

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by JanB on 26-Oct-06 08:31. )</P>I think your users won't be very grateful when they get this MsgBox every time they create or open a document.
    As an alternative, you could create a module AutoExec, with a Sub Main. This will be executed each time Word starts. Put the code in here too, including the MsgBox, and drop this MsgBox from Document_New and Document_Open.

    Forgot to mention that this code should be in a global template, located in the Word Startup folder.
