    Slow shutdown

My Windows 2000 Professional has started to behave in an unusual way (only very recently). It is now taking in the region of one and a half minutes to shut down.

It takes 3 or 4 seconds at most to bring up the flash screen saying

    Are you on a network?

    Re: Slow shutdown

I am 99% sure that it's been only Windows Updates
Since 25th August, security patches installed are (all prefixed KB) :
    918899, 922582, 920685, 918899, 920958, 925486, 923414, 923191, 924191, 924191

(Hey - how come 918899 and 924191 have been installed twice - according to my MS Windows Update History. All four instances record successful installation - 918899 on 25th August and 19th September, 924191 on 11th October and 20th October.)

    Re: Slow shutdown

My guess is that you have a program or service that is not responding to the shutdown sequence. It hangs, Windows finally kills the process, and it eventually shuts down. Does the problem happen if you shut down all applications before attempting to shut down the computer itself? You might even try killing some services.

Another consideration: try a clean boot, wait for the desktop to load, and then attempt shutting down. Use clean boot troubleshooting to help isolate the cause.

    Re: Slow shutdown

In addition what Mark said, Windows 2000 is known for slow shutdown (it waits for processes to stop one by one). As remedy, you can use third-party shutdown exec (there are many free downloasds, for instance, Shutdown v1.02), or, if you have a friend who runs Windows XP on his computer, you can copy SHUTDOWN.EXE from WinXP (it is in C:WindowsSystem32 folder by default). Run shutdown.exe for WinXP from command prompt or from Start | Run with /? switch to see existing options (shutdown, restart, force programs to close, time delay, etc.)
