Problems aftgr System Restore

I am having a nightmare! I think I filled my hard drive....a tiny 12GB. My system totally locked up....couldnt even restart. So I used the multidisk restore CD's included with my PC from Compaq. Still no luck. I cannot startup in safe mode or command prompt only mode. Here are the 2 messages I get when trying to start up

    A) Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory resident programs or remove uneccessary utilities from your config.sys and autoexe.bat files and restart your computer.

Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

What can I do? What is causing this? How do I fix it? I am not worried about saving any data....just gtetting up and running. Thanks!

Go here and download the files to create a Windows 98 Boot Disk. Put them on a floppy and boot the computer to the floppy. That should give you a command prompt to work from and from there you should be able to format the HD and start over.

If not, I'd suspect that your HD or mainboard are shot.

    Re: Problems aftgr System Restore

Have you looked at this article? What you're describing (Windows 98, 12GB hard drive) suggests an older computer that is starting to experience hardware problems. If Doc's suggestion doesn't allow you to reinstall Windows - and maybe even if it does - you should start considering a replacement. For even if Windows can successfully be reinstalled, it may have legions of problems or grow unstable over time.

Going one further, if it's an older computer, you should consider that the components simply wear out over time from the heat. Capacitors (caps) on the motherboard are particularly prone to failure with age.
