    styleref (XP SR3)

can anyone tell me why the STYLEREF field code in the even page header in the attached works, while the odd page header doesn't seem to pick up the Author style--if you press toggle field codes, you see the field codes, but it doesn't translate into normal text.

    thanks in advance

Unless I'm missing something obvious, my guess is that the document is corrupt. If I copy the contents of your document except for the last paragraph mark to a new document, and copy the StyleRef Author field into the header of the new document, it works.

thanks for this. My heart sinks at this advice.
BUT: I've now saved my normal.dot under another name, and let Word generate a new, virgin one.
Even there, the problem persists--styleref works with the Maintitle style, but not with the Author one.

Could the problem be that the offending style is called 'Author', and causes confusion with the Author field? I can get StyleRef to work with other styles in the template, such as 'BlockQuote' or 'Author's Note'--but it doesn't like that author style, and nor does renaming the author style make any difference.

    many thanks

Got it! The blank first paragraph on page 3 is formatted as Author!. Format it with another style and the StyleRef will show the intended text.
