    field codes (XP SR3)

    Is there a field code I can put in the FOOTER of page 1 of a document that gives me the PAGE NUMBER of the last page of the whole document? Or do I just have to put a bookmark at the end?

    Assuming that you have simple page numbering (starting at 1 and continuing through the document) then the { NUMPAGES } field will do what you need.

    thanks, but I don't--they usually don't start at 1. But I think I've had another idea, given that on my last page, I always have a style that is never used before then--I can just use STYLEREF

    sorry--that idea I had was a silly one. Does anyone know if there is any way of setting up something that would automatically add, say, the number of pages in the document to the number of the page at which we are starting?

    Re: field codes (XP SR3)

    many thanks.
    Two things. Firstly, that formula generates a figure that is one higher than what I actually want (it's for a journal, and I want to automate the reproduction of the page extent of each article on the first page). Could one incorporate "-1" into the formula somehow.
    Secondly, is there anywhere on the web that explains this functionality with fields? This is new territory for me, and the Help file in Word doesn't seem to go here at all.

    You can use

    { ={ page }+{ numpages }-1 }

    To find info:
    - Select Help | Microsoft Word Help.
    - Activate the Answer Wizard tab.
    - Type Formula and press Enter.
    - Select Field codes: the = (Formula) field

    Re: field codes (XP SR3)

    You can add -1 in the obvious place, giving you the field code
    { ={ PAGE }+{ NUMPAGES }-1 }

    If you search the help file for "formula field" you should find information on how to do this kind of calculation.
