    A DRM Problem (MCE/Sp2)

    First ..

I know that most of the folks here have no use for the Media Center Edition of XP and may not have one.
In my ignorance, when buying my first computer, this is the one that I selected.
I am not at all unhappy with it though.
I do know that it is built upon the xp pro system.

Now to the problem at hand.

This has been a frustrating problem for over three months now.

I am owed 3 music downdloads from Walmart dot com.

The problem is that when I click on the download/purchase tab, a window comes up, (from walmart).

The message is: You have a problem with windows media DRM.
Please email or call us at .. yadda, yadda, yadda. (My yaddas)

I've downloaded the Media Player 11 because I was getting this message on the Media Player 10 version and thought the upgrade would help.

    Nope, Same deal.

I've searched high and low for an answer but it seems like most issues on drm are dealing with burning or ripping cds.
I'm only trying to download the music to my media player.

Going to the MSN knowledge base and other help/info sites, I just get more and more confused.
Most of these places are only dealing with media players up to the 10 version, I guess because 11 is still in beta?

Before going to the 11 version, I tried all off the version 10 fixes/suggestions, (that I was comfortable with).

Sure hope this makes sense to some of you folks.

    Thank You,
    Mc

When you contacted Walmart Technical Support, what did they say?

You may like to know that Windows Media Centre edition is built on XP Home, not XP Pro - for what it's worth.

I also think you are going to have to get Walmart to sort this one. Did you email/call them at the supplied address/number?

    Re: A DRM Problem (MCE/Sp2)

I use iTunes and haven't done a thing with Wal-Mart, but in addition to kaplinb's question:

    1) Your profile says your browser is Firefox. The Wal-Mart page says you must use IE. Which browser are you using for the attempted download?
    2) Having stated my inexperience with Wal-Mart, do you have popup blocking in IE disabled? Maybe weird, but it could be a problem
    3) DRM shouldn't care about your version of Media Player, you're in a download mode, not yet trying to play or burn the songs to CD.
    4) As both respondents have already said, have you contacted them yet? It COULD very well be something in the coding of their pages...

PS For Stuart, so as not to break up this thread, there is some question in my mind about MCE being based on Home or Pro. There was something pretty recently here in The Lounge that swung my resolve toward the "pro camp" and I don't remember what thread it was yet. I'm gonna go look later.

My apologies, Al is correct and I was mistaken.

XP Media Center Edition has all the functionality of XP Pro, except for the ability to join a domain or used cached credentials.

See http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/editio...-pro/media.mspx and http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediace...uation/faq.mspx for more details.

And just to confirm what you wrote, Stuart, I was able to access on my MCE machine, the Group Policies which is one of the differences between the Home and Pro editions of XP. So, I guess that confirms that MCE is in fact a modification of the Pro version.

    Re: A DRM Problem (MCE/Sp2)

Sorry that it took so long to get back.

Walmart hasn't responded by email yet and I just don't feel like calling them.
I'm only talking about $2.50 worth of songs here.

I do use IE when going to Walmarts site and I made sure that the pop-up blockers and firewall settings were disabled.

I really appreciate all of your suggestions and/if I do hear from Walmart, I will let you know what they say.

Is "You have a problem with windows media DRM" the exact text of the message that appears?

    Re: A DRM Problem (MCE/Sp2)

This is The Strangest thing I have experienced in the short time that I have owned a computer!

When I pasted the information from the Walmart window in my last post, there was a bunch of other stuff in there that I deleted because I thought I had accidentley copied some info from somewhere else?
    NOT SO!

I just went back to double check and below is the whole message.

The strange part? Nothing except that first part appears in the message window!

I don't see it until I paste the contents of the window Here!?
And why would they have all of that dialog about a security download, and for me to wait If they want me to contact them?

I am now truly and totaly stumped!

    Mc

Please wait for the brief setup to complete...

    That's different!

Have you visited Microsoft Update to make sure your security patches are all up to date?
Does the dialog box have a "Continue" button that you could click?

    Hi again Stuart
I am set up to receive updates automatically.
There doesn't appear to be any continue button in or on the Walmart window.

<img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> I guess you are going to have to speak to Walmart then. Sorry I can't offer any more help.

    Thanks Stuart

I can't wait to see what Walmart has to say.
I just wrote and told them about the invisible message.

The hidden text may have been the same color as the back ground.
So when you selected the text it is included, and then when pasted it is also the default color and now you can see it.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
