    Celestial sphere

    OK , I am off on one of my little discoveries... <img src=/S/flee.gif border=0 alt=flee width=25 height=25>

    I am looking for some form of software that will allow me to draw a celestial sphere. I have an example below but looking for a way where I can change the number of longitude and latitude lines. I am not looking for graphic applications but an application that can calculate and do the design automatically.

    Probably looking for something too special here, but is worth a try

    Dunno if this will be of any help: Imageraw Celestial Sphere.bjb.svg - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks

    Not even sure how the SVG is meant to work? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    Re: Celestial sphere

    Nope, sadly not, I understand the principles of how to draw it, I want to have it pre-drawn. I am studying the works of M C Escher at the moment and an fascinated with his sphere pictures and wanted to see if there were celestial "grids" I could print off and have a go myself...

    Re: Celestial sphere

    Not sure if any of these would contain the functionality <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
    This is also worth a look - not because it gives you what you asked for, but because it's one of the most patronising replies I've ever seen on a web forum <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    I don't know why i didn't think of this before as you were the guy who introduced this to me a few years back:

    Ouch, now it is getting addictive......

    Change in latitude position and distance between the longitude and latitude and move the lights <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    He he

    Here is one for John, Paul, George and Ringo. Pole to Pole

    This is the last one now of to become the new M.C.Escher (in my dreams) <img src=/S/artist.gif border=0 alt=artist width=34 height=29>

    and for anyone who wants to try it and wants the code:

    <pre>#include "functions.inc"
    #include "colors.inc"

    camera { location <0, 1, 4> look_at <0, 0, 0> angle 40}

    sky_sphere {
    pigment {
    gradient y
    color_map {
    [ 1.0 color White ]
    [ 1.0 color White ]
    }
    scale 2
    translate -1
    }
    }

    light_source {<-100,200,200> colour rgb 1}

    #declare R=1.3;

    #declare F=function {f_mesh1(x,y,z,0.2,0.2,3,0,3) - 0.03}

    isosurface {
    function { F(f_ph(x,y,z), f_r(x,y,z)-1, f_th(x,y,z)) }
    max_gradient 10
    contained_by{sphere {0,R}}
    pigment {rgb .9}
    finish {phong 0.5 phong_size 10}
    }
    </pre>

    Seriously though that is starting to look very Escher-esk!

    Very nice rendering. I think I misinterpreted what you were looking for. But I'm glad POV-Ray did the trick.

    Beautiful. I've always wanted to play with Pov-ray and Blender, but never really had the time to. It seems to me they'll remain in my wish list forever.
