    Printing in Outlne View (97/SR2)

Is there any way to print headings and "just" the first line of each paragraph in Outline View? I just keep getting all the text when I print, even though all I see on my screen is headings and first lines.

Thanks for any help someone can provide.

    Hi B.,

Are you actually sending the document to the printer or just taking a look at it in Print Preview?

Word will print what you see in Outline View, but it will not display in Print Preview. Try actually printing it.

I actually look at it on my screen but not in Print Preview. However, I've read that it should print what I see in Outline View as I see it on my monitor. <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>

Forgive me for being redundant, but are you saying that you do not get what you see in Outline View when you actually print? Printing Outline View works in all versions of Word.

How are you printing? If you go to Tools/Option/Print, what options are turned on?

Try starting the /a switch? (Go to Start/Run and type: winword /a) and then printing. Does the problem still occur?

    BAM:

I am actually saying that when I am in Outline View (not Print Preview), and I actually see the headings and first lines on my screen, I click the print button on the toolbar and the whole document prints. I also went to File-->Print and clicked OK and the whole document still printed.

When I go to Tools/Option/Print the options turned on are: Update fileds, Allow A4/Letter paper..., Background printing, Drawing Objects. Do I need some other options turned on to make this work? Which ones?

I tried going to Start/Run and typed: winword /a . Word opened, I then opened the document and tried printing wth only the headings and first lines displayed in Outline View. The whole document is still printing.

    Hi B.,

    Ah, all details are extremely helpful! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

If you are showing All Headings then the entire paragraphs will print. The "Show First Line Only" option only applies to how it is viewed on the screen. <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

I've tried several things to achieve the result you want. All I could come up with was to:
-Switch to Full Screen View (View/Full Screen)
    - Turn off Outlining Toolbar (Right-click toolbar)
    - Take several screen captures (Print Screen on the keyboard) and paste each one in new document
    - Use the Cropping tool to remove duplicate information/screen and screen elements and piece them together.

Perhaps someone will come up with an alternative??

Re: Printing in Outlne View (97/SR2)

    Thanks for your help.

I was trying to figure out a way to print all the headings with only the first line of text.

After reading a Que book about Office for Win 95 I thought the same feature would carry over to another version. In a troubleshooting section it says, "Word prints only what is diaplyed on-screen in Outline view. Display the level of headings you want to print, and then click the Show First Line Only button in the Outline toolbar."

I'm disappointed that it will take so much manual labor to accomplish what I started out to do, but I'll live and get over it.

I really appreciate your time and help in coming up with solutions.

    Hi B.,

I would say your Que book is wrong. The fact that it states: "Display the level of headings you want to print, and then click the Show First Line Only" is just incorrect.

The Show First Line Only command applies to the paragraphs that follow the Heading (body text) and the only way to display this is to Show All Levels. You can't collapse the Outline to a specific Heading Level and show the first of the paragraphs that follow the heading. You must have "Show All" turned on for this to work.

As further backup to this statement, (bam pulls dusts off the ol' trusty old Word 6.0 Developers Guide and looks up a couple of WordBasic commands)

"ShowHeading: In Outline View, shows all headings up to the specified heading level and hides subordinate headings and body text

OutlineShowFirstLine: You can use this statement to hide all but the first line of body text"

Since Word 7 (95) still used WordBasic these commands would be the same in that version too.
