Can a picture be inserted over another picture? (2003)

Can a picture be inserted over another picture so that the second picture is covering part of the first?

    Yes.

Format the pictures using a layout that is not "in line with text", and set Allow Overlap in the advanced properties of the format object menu.

For example you can go to the Format Menu, choose "Shape", or "Picture" or "Autoshape" or whatever type of picture it is, go to the layout tab and select Square then click Advanced. Under "Picture Position" make sure you have checked "Allow Overlap".

    Yes it can.

Highlight the image that you want to go "over" the first and on the Picture toolbar click Text wrapping | In front of Text

You will see a handle appear around the image, you can now place the image over the top of the other

And sort of on this topic (or not?), how can Word be set up so that the default setting for pictures imported from a scanner or camera has the layout property 'in front of text' (so making it sizeable and place-able on the page no problem).
    Thanks

    Select Tools | Options...
    Activate the Edit tab
Select "In front of text" in the "Insert/Paste pictures as" dropdown box.
    Click OK.

(Personally, I strongly prefer "In line with text" - it is by far the least troublesome way to work with pictures in a Word document)
