Cannot get custom filter to work (2003)

On trying to use the custom filter to bring up several rows which begin with the no. 14708 l get a result of no rows being shown. I cannot work this out as l should get lots of rows which start with 14708. The rows l am looking for are all 7 digits long and are numerical. i.e 1470819, 1470817. Is there anything l am doing wrong?

    Try using

    is greater than 1470799
    and
    is less than 1470900

    ..that'll work

Is the data in the column numeric or text? Could you attach a workbook that shows the problem?

This feature will not work with numerals. I converted the numbers to text. Create a new column and type =TEXT(A1,"###") assuming the first value is A1 and copy down. Now try the same thing without the question marks

As informed by Jezza on another posting, this feature will not work with numerals, this is the problem.

Look at <post:=611,050>post 611,050</post:> an follow the instructions given.

in cell A2 type in =TEXT(E2,"###").....

now put in the custom filter in column A begins with 1469
