Extracting numbers is a cell (Excel 2002)

I am trying to extract the numbers at the beginning of the cell so I can search in a different table for them. How can I do this?
Ex: "1.1.2.5 Excel programming" is the cell I need to extract the numbers from in order to search for 1.1.2.5 in a different table using VLOOKUP...I have about 700 rows to extract numbers from, I wouldn't want to do this manually...

    Thanks guys

If that text is in A1, the you could use:

    =LEFT(A1,SEARCH(" ",A1))

    Hi,

And if that search gets influenced by the trailing space, then use:

    =TRIM(LEFT(A1,SEARCH(" ",A1))) .

    Cheers
