Increasing no. of field names (2003)

I am trying to change the data type of some field names in a database , but as l have over 255 field names in a database l keep getting the attached error. I am reluctant to amend the registry in case l mess up windows , is there another solution without deleting fields within the database?

You can't have more than 255 fields in any one table. So if you need more than that you need to split the data into separate tables.

You might need to restructure the whole thing in to several tables, but if your design is basically correct, then the new table would have a 1-1 relationship with the main table so that it acts as an extension of it. You can join the two tables in a query then retrieve what you want from either table. But any one query would also be limited to 255 fields in the data returned.

If you have 255 fields in any single table, your design needs to be rethought.
