    IE7 Security settings (XP\SP2\IE7)

Since installing IE 7, I have tried to download certain files, ( not all ) like Google Rhapsody Player for example and it says that my security settings will not allow me to download this file. I have checked all of the suggested settings for this site and still no DL allowed. Most downloads from other sites are allowed OK.

Going into Internet Options>Security>Internet>custom, I see that the default settings are "medium-high". I change them to "medium", then reset, then apply and it seems to take but when I go back and look, the settings back to Medium-high again.

How can I get the settings to stick?

    No responses on this yet.
Maybe not enough people have taken the plunge to IE7 yet.

    Any ideas?

    Re: IE7 Security settings (XP\SP2\IE7)

    Bob,
I've just downloaded IE7 and, as far as I can see, changing from the default of 'medium high' to 'medium' via the custom level option does seem to stick when I do it (when I go back and check it's still at 'medium') - But don't have any idea why you should be having the problem, or how you might resolve it.
Have you tried just moving the slider down to 'medium' and clicking apply, without going into custom level? I also get a prompt asking if I'm sure it's what I want to do.

    Keith,
    Thanks for the comeback.
Yes, I think I have tried all of the combinations of resetting the custom levels and when I go back into the customs level, there it is back in medium high?

I don't even know if this is what is keeping me from downloading from certain sites or not but I did notice this peculiarity in custom settings. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    Re: IE7 Security settings (XP\SP2\IE7)

    Hi Bob,

I downloaded IE7 several days ago and have been running without any hitches. I had modified my security settings for a couple of items which obviously set Security Settings to "Custom".

I tested out your situation by changing my Custom setting to Medium, applied and then backed out of IE. Started up again and the settings stuck at Medium.

I then changed to Medium-High and again they stuck at the Medium-High.

I then reset the settings to default and they also stuck.

As a final test, I reset to Medium and again the setting stayed.

With the settings at Medium, I sought out the Rhapsody Player and was able to download it without any issues.

Bottomline is that I am not having any problems with changing and retaining the Security settings. Neither am I having any problems with downloading any files.

I'll end this message now, reset to Medium-High and retry the Rhapsody download.

Edited to add: OK, reset the settings to Medium-High, backed out of IE7, got back in and went to the Rhapsody site where I downloaded RhapsodyReal.exe without any problems.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

I have tried the same settings and I have not had any problems.

By chance are you (Viking) running any other SW that might be helping you control these settings?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: IE7 Security settings (XP\SP2\IE7)

    To Bob and Dave,
Went back once again and tried the Rhapsody download and again got the rather generic error message shown below.
I have redone the suggested security settings that Rhapsody suggested, including putting about 3 or 4 sites in the trusted zone.

As a trial, I have also disabled ( temporarily ) Spy Sweeper, Acronis Security suite and even ZA firewall just to see if I could narrow it down some. Nope.

Google Rhapsody hasn't been much help, just pointing me to the things I already got from their website.
    Strange.

BTW, I think I at least have the security settings to stick at medium, not that it has helped with the download?

Have you modified your hosts file? Have you run anything that blocks sites suchas Spybot immunization?

    Joe,
I checked the hosts file and it only has the localhost entry.
Also disabled Spybot immunization and Spy Sweeper.

Still can't DL the plug in for Rhapsody Real Player.

I think Spybot immunization just adds a whole list to your blocked sites in IE. Have you checked that?

Yes, I did check that. It was one reason why I DL "zoned out" so as to get a better look at the restricted zone.
I also tried undoing the immunization files within SpyBot which removed ALL of those sites from the restricted zone.

Are you running a hardware firewall that could be configured to block that site? Have you messed with any Group Policies?

Can you provide a link to a file that you can NOT down load?

Only firewall is ZA and there are not blocks there.

I can't even DL Real Player directly from their site but noticed this mention of IE 7.

Does Rhapsody 4 work with Internet Explorer 7?

    Answer
Although Rhapsody 4 includes many fixes for Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7), there are still issues with IE 7. At this time, no version of Rhapsody is completely compatible with IE 7, but we do plan to release a number of fixes later this year to fix the worst of the problems.

For best results, we suggest using Rhapsody 4 on a machine with IE 5.5 to IE 6.x.

I know both you and Dave say you have no problems getting the plug in with IE 7 but I sure do!
