Microsoft Update issue (XP Pro SP2)

Has anyone ever seen this error message when manually running Microsoft Update (or rather, attempting to do so)?

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

    1. Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
    2. Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem .

At which point choosing option one simply takes me in a circle coming back to that screen and option two helps in no way at all.

    Thanks in advance!

    Stephen,

    Have you tried option 2??

The first option should have downloaded the newest MS authentication files to make sure you have a legit copy of Windows installed.

Option two should explain why you can't do option1.

Yep, I passed the WGA test. But no ActiveX components attempt to load, so I don't get any other options.

"But no ActiveX components attempt to load"

Have you tried using IE rather than Firefox?

Yes, of course. I'd never get that far with Firefox, an alert comes up that you need to be using IE. Anyhow, I think this might have something to do with me messing around with XP AntiSpy.

If you think the problem might be with XP-AntiSpy (and if you are using IE7) I see that there is an update which is supposed to fix some issues with IE7.

Bingo, after uninstalling Anti-Spy and a reboot, everything is back to normal.
