.NET Framework 3.0

Microsoft have released .NET Framework Version 3.0

Read Me file

The initial download is only 2.8Mb, but that is for the installer. The installer will then download the necessary components. Expect a download of about 30-60Mb depending on your system.

To install it you need Windows XP SP2 or Windows 2003 Server SP1. Windows Vista already has .NET Framework 3.0 installed.

Re: .NET Framework 3.0

Hi Tony,

When I updated .Net Framework from 1.1 to 2.0 the 2.0 install left version 1.1 on the system assuming that some applications might need 1.1. (at least from what I read at the time).

Have you installed 3.0 yet and if so, does it leave older versions like 1.1 and 2.0 on one's system? Not worried about hard drive capacity as I have lots of spare capacity. Just curious. I did check the ReadMe and found no references to the retention of older versions.

Cheers, Bob
Regards,
Bob

Re: .NET Framework 3.0

I have 1.1, 2.0 & 3.0 installed.

The following is from Microsoft:
The .NET Framework 3.0 adds new technologies to the .NET Framework 2.0, which makes the .NET Framework 3.0 a superset of the .NET Framework 2.0. You can think of .NET Framework 3.0 as an "additive" release to the .NET Framework 2.0, as contrasted with a generational release where software is revised across the board. (For example, the .NET Framework 2.0 was a generational release over the .NET Framework 1.0.)

Re: .NET Framework 3.0

I'm afraid I don't follow this Tony. If 3.0 is a "superset" of 2.0, then surely 2.0 can be removed if 3.0 is to be installed. Also, is the "generational" 2.0 release backward compatible with 1.1? If so, then 3.0 should be all one needs.

I don't think it's a good idea to remove older versions. A web site might not be updated and either require you to download big chunks of version 2.0 or try to fall back on 1.1. Better to have them installed in advance.... the .Net solution to "DLL hell" is vast quantities of disk space.

Thanks Jeff. I just encountered precisely that kind of situation. Lucky we have big HDs these days!

Re: .NET Framework 3.0

If you have 2.0 installed this update will only install the new components. 3.0 is essentially 2.0 with additional components.

So why isn't it 2.1?

Might have been needed for Vista to use it, as Vista is now RTM'd!!

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Could it be the mystique of version 3.0, when a certain company's products are said to really be ready for prime time?
