Doc embedded in spreadsheet (Excel 2003)

I am having Word docs embedded in a spreadsheet stripped out when retreived from FTP site (zipped or not) and when sent as attachment (zipped or not) to Outlook email. Here is the error message I get when I open the spreadsheet:
In a "Repair" window: "Errors were detected in [name of spreadsheet]. Excel was able to open the file by making the replairs listed below; Damage to file was so extensive that repairs were not possible..."

Question: why would such errors occur?

Mailing a workbook as a zipped attachment should transfer the workbook without any change, so the problem appears to be in the workbook itself. Are you sure that the documents are embedded, not linked?

Very strange. Could you perhaps attach such a problem zip file to a reply?
