Vanishing act

I have 3 PCs running Win98. On all 3 I have downloaded/ installed Tclock from the ZD site (replaces the clock in the system tray) and turned off my Quick Launch bar and replaced it with the Desktop toolbar. On 2 of the PCs, these changes seem to have been accepted - they are there when I turn on the PC again. On the 3rd PC, these changes seem to vanish when I reboot/turn on the system. I can redo the changes (execute Tclock from the programs directory and change the toolbars) - they stay until I reboot again.

On this 3rd PC, I even checked msconfig and Tclock is checked off in the Startup collection of programs (although it is not in my startup folder but many other checked items are not in the startup folder either).

Any ideas on what is causing these 2 items to vanish?

Not sure, but if TweakUI is installed, go to the Explorer tab & make sure Save Explorer window settings is checked.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Phil. I do have tweakUI installed on the "offending" PC and Save Explorer Window Settings is set.

Hmmm. Not sure. Why don't you uncheck it in msconfig & reboot. Then recheck it & reboot. You could also check the common registry RUN keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun

Look also for RunServices, RunOnce, etc. & check similar subkeys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Oh, just a thought. Do these utilities have an options, settings, or preference tab where you can start it with windows?

Other than that, I can't think of anything.

Thanks for the thoughts, Phil. I'll try your items. But a few quick things:
- the TClock utility does have a checkbox to Load when Windows starts and it is checked.
- recall that one of the vanishing items is my desktop toolbar and the absence of my quick launch bar (I want QL off). I turned on DT and turned off QL the same way on all 3 machines. But my "vanishing-act" machine, on reboot, also turns off DT and turns on QL.

At least as far as the registry goes, I did not see an entry for TClock (assume I would see something there). So maybe the off-reboot-on-reboot sequence might work.

I'm wondering if there is a fundamental problem/setting that affects both. If so, the potential solutions with TClock (turning it off/on in msconfig) won't do it.

Thanks - fred
