four or five instances of each icon on my desktop

help! I spilled a drink on my wireless keyboard. I took it and rinsed it off, then wiped it off, then blow dried it. I suspect when I was wiping it off, even though I was in another room, It was making extra copies of my originals shortcuts My desktop is totally covered with them, and they lap over each other. When I click and drag one, the whole bunch is selected and are all dragged together. I can't seperate them., there is about 5 instances of each shortcut. I rebooted and that didn't work. I have never seen this problem before and hope I never see it again. I can still get to the start button and the programs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have Windows98 se

Sounds like it could be a stuck Shift key, try pressing it a few times to clear it.

Guess you've guessed the only obvious fix is to delete each extra icon, you can Crtl+click to select more than one at a time.

You could also try logging off (not re-booting) and logging on again as another user. If it's snarled up software, this should clear it. If it's a stuck key or whatever, it won't.

Just for future reference (and if you know) - if I had something similar happen on a networked PC, would deleting the .PWL file for the user allow me to reuse that user's name?

I know that clears all of the user saved passwords, I don't see why it wouldn't clear the desktop settings aswell.
