CD to MP3s

I'd like to convert my audio CD album collection so I can play them on a portable MP3 player. I'm thinking I'd like to convert the audio CD files to MP3 and then copy those to CDs to play in the portable MP3 player. I heard somewhere that a guy put his huge CD collection onto just 9 CDs in MP3 format.

Can anyone give me suggestions and recommend a freeware software? I need something that will save artist and album info with the MP3. I downloaded Express Rip v1.4 and gave it a try. I produced MP3 files that were unacceptably huge (4,000+ for one song). Please help. I'd sure appreciate it!

The size of the MP3 files will vary with the quality you select. (Can you tell us what the 4,000+ is? I assume 4,000kb+?) The MP3 sampling range is from 32kbps to 320 kbps - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 - and quality of the result and size of the file varies with the sampling rate selected.

There are several threads in this forum about ripping CDs to MP3s, you can find them through the Lounge Search function.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 09-Nov-06 10:10. )
A CD-R disc holds 650-700 MB, so 4 MB for one file is not too bad, considered relative to that capacity.

Added: By the way, Apple Computer offers a free program that will rip audio CDs, which you can find here: Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes. By changing the "export" format in the options, you can specify MP3 format rather than the proprietary AAC format.

And there's always CDex, a fabulous little program that I have been using for years now. You need internet access to get album and title information for each track if you want to get it from their database.

I also would recommend CDex. It's . I've been using an old version forever and have never felt the need to upgrade or change. It's small, easy to use and produces high quality MP3 files from CDs. My preference for quality and size is 192kbs, but the program offers several choices.

Edited by Doc to add There's a review of the program is here.

Hey, thanks to all for your help and suggestions. This is all new to me and I'm learning. Appreciated the point regarding size of MP3 in comparison to CDR size - 4mb not much when we look at it that way.
