    Hyperlink to email attachments (2003)

Where are e-mail attachments stored? Is there a way to link to an e-mail attachment from within MSWord or Excel without saving the attachment to another location first?

    Thanks,
    Susan

Attachments are stored in your .pst file, just like e-mails, appointments etc. There is no way to link to an attachment from outside Outlook. You'll have to save the attachment as a file on a local or network disk first.

Additional note: you can work on email attachments directly by opening them from the message, however, if you do not save changes and you close Outlook, you will irretrievably lose your changes. If you open a lot of messages it is easy to lose track of the fact that you may have made changes, and lose your work (voice of experience). Changes that you successfully save in open attachments are stored only in the attachment to the message, nowhere else, unless you specifically use Save As in the open application to save the attachment to another location, or you use Save Attachment from the Outlook menu.

For a tool for saving attachments and leaving a file hyperlink in the message, see <!post=this post,443421>this post<!/post>.
