    Runtime Error in IE 7 (IE7)

    When I try to accfess Microsoft Product Support or any Knowledge Base article, I get a web page which reports a Runtime Error. This has been going on for sometime , perhaps since the end of August. I think the problem started with one of the pre-release versions of IE 7. I first used IE 7 with Beta 3, upgraded to RC1 and then to the present "Gold" version. I only have this problem when I try to access the above mentioned web sites.

    Here is a copy of the HTML messages on the web page I receive:

    Server Error in '/' Application.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Runtime Error
    Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

    Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

    <configuration>
    <system.web>
    <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
    </configuration>

    I tried to create the configuration file, but with no results. I must be doing something wrong. I greated the file in notepad and placed it in IE7's root directory in C:ProgramFilesInternet Explorer. I named the file 'web.config'. I thought this proceedure would give me an error message that would help to find the cause of the Run Time Error.

    That code is ASP.Net code that doesn't help you, unless you secretly have the ability to save a file on Microsoft's server. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    You might try updating your .Net framework. If you use the Windows Updates web site, check the "non-critical" updates (custom update) and see whether there are any fixes available for your computer.

    Re: Runtime Error in IE 7 (IE7)

    Thanks for your reply. I am sorry for the delay in replying, but something unexpected came up last night.

    I am not sure what the connection is between Internet Explorer and .NET, because it seems to me that you don't need the .NET Framework to run Internet Explorer. However, if I read you correctly, the problem is not with Internet Explrer but with the .NET Framework. The reason for the Run Time error is because the server in question uses it to interact with other computers trying to access this particular section of the Microsoft web site.

    Indeed, I am having a problem with the .NET framework. I have versions 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 installed. In October, I was on holiday when that month's updates came out. By the weekend, I had forgotten about them until I suddenly realized that the Update Utility had started to install them. I was afraid that it had installed the Genuine Advantage Validation Tool upgrade. I was able to stop it in time, but I when I manually reran the Update Utility I had problems with two of the updates. One eventually installed correctly, but the other, the security update for .NET Framework 2.0, KB922770 did not. This update stalled and refused to complete. Microsoft Update lists this update as having failed, but does not provide it on its list so that I can retry the update. My Add/Remove Programs lists this update, but without an installation date or size. Furtheremore, when I tried to install this upgrade via manual download and install it just hangs. In addition, the installation of the new .NET Framework 3.0 diplays similar behaviour hanging in the middle of its installation..

    However, I don't think that this should cause the Run Time error notification, because in all probability Microsoft uses the older version 1 on its web sites for greater compatibility.

    I just tried to uninstall the .NET Framework 2.0 full installation and got an error message. It said that I should check that the installer in C:WindowsInstaller was present, which it was. I think that if I could manually uninstall this version and reinstall it, it might at least solve the problem with the.NET Framework and perhaps the problem with IE. How would I go about this without ruining my system?

    Regarding the messy question of removing a partial installation of .Net, I'm not sure. There might be some help on the Windows boards for a general utility or step-by-step directions.

    Regarding the browser, hopefully someone who uses IE7 can chime in.

    Re: Runtime Error in IE 7 (IE7)

    I found a solution on the MSdn site by chance. I was able to download a 'dotnetfx_cleanup_tool'. This tool is designed for situations such as the one I was in. It can be used for Versions 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0, one or all of the them at once. The tool worked when I used it for Version 2.0, but when I tried to reinstall the installation stalled at "executing registering the path from c:WindowsMicrosoft NETFrameworkv2.0.50727regsvcs.exebootstrapi.

    Can you post a link to the cleanup tool so others may benefit from it without having to search all over for it?

    (Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - it's very easy, see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

    I have a link to the blog on Microsoft's .NET Framework site. It has the link on the page for the Download plus an explanation on the use of this tool. I am sorry, but I do not know how to enter the link so that one can just click on it so somebody wishing to use it will have to paste in into his/her browser.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/200.../08/406671.aspx

    Whoever uses this tool should read the caveats. When I used the tool it allowed me to try and use the installation utility, but the install still hangs. There were other side effects. My Money 2007 stopped working and had to be reinstalled. My HP Image Zone and ATI Catalyst Software has stopped working. The blog also cautions that other shared files from other .NET Framework versions may be removed thus requiring their reinstallation. The Catalyst software requires .NET Framework 1.1 or 2.0 to run. However there is no listed requirement for the HP software and Microsoft Money. However, the author is willing to help with issues that arise from the use of this tool. I am going to have to write him myself.
