Realplayer (WIN XP PRO SP2)

I have WinXP Pro SP2 Operating system. I login as System admin account with all system adim rights.

I was installing realplayer and got this error message. " As a restricted user you dont have adequate window operating system rights to install software please contact your adminstrator"

I also tried to login in safe mode as system administrator but same message.

Anybody else have this problem and if so, how the **** do I fix it? It's driving me nuts.

Regards,
Kevin Bell

Kevin, did you try to install Realplayer by right clicking on the setup executable and select 'Run as...' Here you can once more confirm that you use the administrator account.

Also: do you run any firewall and/or malware protection programs? Real Player is designed to install some applets to start automatically (tkbell.exe), monitor your Internet activity and check for updates which often recognized as malware by anti-spyware programs.

Kevin,
Don't feel bad. I'm having basically the same problem with Real Player and Rhapsody also from Real Player.

See my thread starting at <post#=611,366>post 611,366</post#>

I STILL haven't been able to DL Real or Rhapsody despite many attempts to fix it using tips from here in the Lounge and from the Real Player troubleshooting site.

I am about been ready to say "stuff it" to the Real products.

Re: Realplayer (WIN XP PRO SP2)

Thanks for the posts. I wish I could say I've fixed it but I can't. I have said 'stuff it' (only I didn't use such kind words) to the Real products.

I have cleaned the temp folder, created administrator level users, right clicked, left clicked, shouted, e-mailed and generally exhausted myself on this so I've given up.

I sent Real.com e-mails that have been ignored.

So, I downloaded Realplayer Alternative from Softpedia at http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Vi...ternative.shtml

Lo and behold, it installed, it works and it doesn't try to send my entire family tree and all their activities back to Real.com.

Desription from the website.

Real Alternative allows you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealOne Player or RealPlayer from Real Networks.

Supported are: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt) and ReadPix (.rp).

It also supports RealMedia content that is embedded in webpages. The very user-friendly installation is fully customizable, which means that you can install only those components that you want.

Basically, up yours Real Networks

Regards,
Kevin Bell

I have used Real Alternative for quite some time to play back speech and music from BBC Radio. My only annoyance is that occasionally it doesn't resync when you move the time slider to skip over stuff you don't want (e.g. the exactly-2-minute song in "Round the Horne"), but you can get round that by Play -> Go to, and specifying the time...

Re: Realplayer (WIN XP PRO SP2)

Kevin,
Guess what?
In a fit of determination, I uninstalled IE 7 and reverted to IE 6.
No other changes and lo and behold went to the Rhapsody site and downloaded the software and the plug in with no problems at all. No mysterious messages saying my security settings weren't allowing the download.

So, what ever changes were made in the upgrade to IE 7 apparently were the stubborn things that prevented the download. Go figure!!!!

The real frustrating thing was that the error message never explained WHAT settings were preventing the file download!

Now I'm going to reinstall IE 7 and see what happens.

Good to hear that somebody is solving problems. Lord knows what's in store for us all when Vista hits the streets. I shudder to think.

Cheers,
Kevin

Kevin,
In a follow up to my last post. I reinstalled IE7 and it still "allows" me to go to the Rhapsody site and DL whatever I want.
Mysteries remain!
