Design Ideas on automatcally updating an xls (Excel 2003)

    Hi All,

I am looking for some design ideas. My problem is as follows:-

I have a central spreadsheet which contains people and weeks.
I will write a macro which sends out a message to each person for their number of hours each week.
I want to then collect the results from the email or a file in the email and update the main spreadsheet.
This needs to be done all automatically if possible.

I have some ideas but looking for anything others, not expecting macro code to do this, I will right that, just looking for any clever ways of tackling the problem, especially the bridge between email, excel and any automaition ideas.

Any concepts ideas would be great.

    Many thanks

    Mike

I did a similar exercise about 2 years ago and it came a real labour of love. I used various methods.

Instead of emailing the excel spreadsheets I had the staff drop the file into a shared network drive folder

Next I used a piece of code in a "master" workbook that went to that shared folder and imported each file into the master and I was able to do calculations with a comnsolidated page summary you can see the workbook here <!post=Import data into Excel from another spreadsheet ,476812>Import data into Excel from another spreadsheet <!/post> .

There has been a lot of views expressed about this and some of the guru's don't like the method of consolidation but it is your choice. I have also tried email attachment stripping software which is OK but the member of staff who used it found it difficult to control as she was continually having to chase people up all the time when the reports were sent in late. My starters for 10.

    Thanks Jezza,

My starting point was to have a standard directory and dump the results there, I have used some software in the past which will dump files into a folder.

I was fishing to see if there was any other approaches, many thanks.

    Mike,
Have you thought about publishing an interactive web page.
The users could then directly enter the data to the page.

YOur macro would then only be need to send out reminders, or audit those who have not responded.
