    Word Table to Excel (XP)

Not sure if this is the correct forum as it may be a Word problem or possibly a Windows Setting problem.

User created in Word a table with dates such as 31/03/07 (dd/mm/yy format). He then copied the information from the table to Excel. Dates ended such as 3/07/31. The day now showing as the year.

When I copied the information from the table to Excel the dates remained as entered in the table. Thus the confusion as to what forum. Is this different Excel settings on two units, or is it a Windows setting?

    Thanks.

By default, Excel uses the date format set in the Regional and Language Settings control panel. This can be overridden by setting a format explicitly in the Number tab of Format | Cells...
So the first thing I'd look at is the control panel setting.

I will check with the user when he comes back from lunch. However because dates are based upon serial numbers, is there a method to change the dates in Excel back to the correct format, that is day/month/year. Use of VBA is acceptable. Otherwise, I'll tell him that he will have to make the changes manually.

    Thanks.

I't probably just a matter of formatting: select the cells with dates, then select Format | Cells and specify the desired date format.

Tried various selections to change the format. Howver, 31 always shows up as a year, not the date. Thanks anyway.

I'd still look at the control panel settings. If that doesn't help, you might try attaching either the Word doc or the Excel workbook, or stripped down copies thereof.

Checked control panel of user and regional settings were yyyy-mm-dd. Thanks.

That would explain the difference in behavior.
