Block Only Myspace in IE (XP SP2 IE6)

How can I block just Myspace on my son's PC ??? He doesn't use it, but his friends are on it when they are here and not supervised. I don't like the Content Advisor. It's a royal pain in the <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0>, asking for a password for every site and every ad on the sites.

Aside from the features of your security software, one classic way is to add the domain to the hosts file. These posts might help:

Add the IP address of some "Childish" website to the myspace.com entry in the hosts file. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

The best is to add a entry with out and another with the "www."

But remember, that if these kids know very much about IE then they can edit the hosts file.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Doc

I have had this argument on and off for a good few months now. I use Norton AV and I have NAV parental control. At first I had the default setting and it blocked almost every site for the girls even the BBC as it was seen as a news group!!!!! After a while the girls complained and I sat down with them and worked out the main sites they wanted, a quick check and I allowed that specific domain through.

I was pestered for a long time to let them have MSN accounts and I set them up with accounts so they could chat to their mates after school and I found the whole thing horrific. The young minds cannot work out tone, very much like the Loungers here sometimes, and the arguments started "She said that".."He called me a <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0>" etc etc....I simply blocked the site in NAV.

Jezzarette 2 is definitely IT savvy and she has shocked me with the things she has worked out. Q" How did you find that out J2?" A"Simple Dad, Google" These kids are not stupid, they will suss out hosts very easily and they do talk and network....I would go for generic AV software, net nanny stuff that takes control back to the less IT savvy Mum and Dad. We do it in the Lounge, they do it in MSN/MySpace <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

This is one of the great things about having a router-modem with it's own firewall built-in...

Thanks Jefferson, Jezza, Dave & Leif. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I've been busy with a few things and just got back to this. I found the Hosts file on my system (C:WINDOWSSystem32driversetc) after un-hiding the protected system files and folders, opened it in Notepad and added a loopback entry to 127.0.0.1 for www.myspace.com and that did the trick. I'll now go and do the same to my son's machine. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

My son and his friends aren't savvy enough to figure out this little trick, so I think it will stop them cold !!! <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>
