    Software packages

    Hi all,

Can someone give me an idea of what software packages can be used to build an intranet system which will get some data from a database build in Microsoft SQL Server 2005?

    Any help much appreciated

    Skips

Still a bit vague in your requirement. What do you need to get out of the system?

    Remember:

    Feasilbility
    Initial Design
    Detailed Design
    Development
    Implementation
    Maintenance.......back to design

As an outline. You need to know what you want and this comes from the feasibility, this is done by talking to the customer and recognising their desires and business needs. Then and only then can you think about the solution space. You seem to be trapped at pre-feasibility and trying to cut your cloth to fit the suit.

    Re: Software packages

I thought your previous suggestion of trying out DotNetNuke was a good one, since it's a .Net-based product. Any ASP or ASP.Net-based framework or content management system running on Microsoft IIS will be able to use Microsoft's ADO or ADO.Net database interface. If you start with a non-Microsoft platform (e.g., Java Server Pages or PHP), then you might need to shop around for database connectors to talk to SQL Server.

Another question to add to the others - are you after a "software package" or a programming language? From your previous threads it seemed your task was to develop something yourself (implying the latter).

Microsoft Access can act as a front end for SQL Server, and you can use data access pages etc. to web-enable an Access database. The details of that are beyond my expertise but a visit to the Access forum may shed some light. There have been several threads there about web-enabling Access databases in the past.

If at first you do succeed, you've probably missed something.
