Problem Between Word Versions (Word 2000)

We are in the process of sending word documents created in Word 2000 to reviewers that are using Word 97 SR 2. We're having a problem on the receiver's end where attempting to open the file in Word 97 causes an Illegal Operation only with some of the files. Are there any known issues regarding this? Does anybody have previous experience with this and a solution?

    Thanks.

More info needed. Attach the error message if you can; otherwise include the exact text.

When during the open does the error occur -- does the doc display or not display before your user sees the error?

You are of course making sure these W2000 docs are saved to W97 format...?

Are there any macros in the documents?

In Tools/Options/Save there is an option to disable features not supported by Word 97. That might help.

In addition to the other suggestions, you may want to check for auto macros in the documents. Some Word 2000 macros will cause error messages in Word 97 when compilation is attempted. Generally, the projects will be unviewable from within Word 97's Visual Basic editor even if not protected from viewing by a password.

Generally, integration between Word 2000 and Word 97 is pretty much seamless.

I know that nested tables get trashed if opened in Word 97 but I don't know that this generates any error messages. Have you checked Microsoft's knowledge base using the exact error language? While I've forgotten the link, you can find it in the web resources (Microsoft) section of my FAQ or just go to the Microsoft site and it should show up as a suggestion under support before you get very far.

That fixed it. Thanks for the pointer.
