    SUMIF and LEFT Functions (Excel 2003)

    Hi,

    Just wondering if someone could help me easily perform a sum function in the attached file. In the 4 cells, B22:C23 I'm trying to sum the values above. The only criteria is that the sums in row 22 only pick up the Target figures and the sums in row 23 only pick up the Actual figures.

    You can see the way I've got to the correct answer so far is quite laborious. I've tried to input the following formula into cell B22 but to no avail.

    =SUMIF($A$2:$A$21,LEFT($A$22,4)="Targ",2:21)

    Thanks so much.

    Kindly, Al

    It's easier, actually: in B22, use
    <code>
    =SUMIF($A$2:$A$21,"Target*",B$2:B$21)
    </code>
    and in B23:
    <code>
    =SUMIF($A$2:$A$21,"Actual*",B$2:B$21)
    </code>
    You can fill these formulas right to column C.
