    Google Adsense

    Just as a matter of interest and to see if I can improve my AdSense hit types. I have just tried out a little experiment by adding a two advert vertical panel on my website and have been doing it for about a week and already making money from it...I won't be able to buy the new Ferrari with it yet though, but it is nice to see some cash <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    The question: When you set up Google Adsense it scans your website and picks up a set of key words from it? Do these keywords come from the meta data in the <HEAD> part of HTML or does it just scan words in the <BODY> of the HTML? It appears an arbitrary question but I may review the way my pages are written.

    I'm not absolutely sure of the algorithm that's used, although I'd be very surprised if it isn't related to that used by their search engine bot - the exact details of which are perhaps Google's most closely guarded secret.

    Re: Google Adsense

    I updated the index page at the beginning of the week with a new tag line and a couple of links and after that I started to get adverts about zippo lighters...that was obvious as the words piezo and butane were on the front so it obviously reads the body text to get some for of contextual note.

    I suppose I could experiment with this and place a load of selective words in the meta data and see what comes up and then change it so I only have text and let it run...The Googlebot visits quite often and it updates the Google search quite often so I wouldn't be surprised if it is a mixture of the two, I suppose I will have to check experimentally...cheers DW

    Re: Google Adsense

    After using a highly scientific method of testing <img src=/S/liar.gif border=0 alt=liar width=25 height=22>

    I can safely say that on my site I have a series of pages with different content on (my story pages) the meta data is exactly the same on each (templates) and I have added the same advert code on each one. On each view of the stories the advert changes to the contents of the story (Tennis balls has wimbledon tickets, bicycles has bike holidays for example) So my very crude method tends to prove that <BODY> is the most important.

    I therefore have a very cunning plan....which I will divulge after a second experiment <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> back soon

    Jezza,

    It has been a week, I don't know if I can hold out any longer for your latest instalment.

    I tell you what , I completely forgot about this cunning plan.....I'll just pop up to my PC upstairs and quickly load a test file to my domain....back in about 10 minutes <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Google Adsense

    Whoops slightly overdue by 7 minutes, thanks Stuart

    I have craeted a little test page at:

    http://www.magicforest.co.uk/indexadsense.htm

    I changed the title to college and placed some keywords College, Teaching, Degree, University, Diploma all other meta data and keywords have been removed.

    If you look at the bottom of the page there is a green stripe that contains the key words above but I have formatted the div tags ( .adtest) to ensure that the margin is 999 pixels to the left of the screen using the style:

    <style>
    .adtest{
    background-color: #00FF66;
    margin-left: -999px;
    }
    </style>

    Strictly this is braeking every design protocol but was just a way to see if I could introduce test to a page without it affecting the view on screen.

    The delay was to see if the adsense updated after a while but i does not seem to be working <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15> just an idea but I will review it everso often to see it is picked up by google <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    I get google adverts for "Distance Learning Courses" and "Top 5 Online University". Is this what you were expecting?

    I have a sneaking suspicion that time in the Magic Forest may pass at a different rate than out here in the real world. Jezza has been gone for 10 minutes of Magic Forest time, but hundreds of years have elapsed in the life of the snail in my back garden.

    That is what I was hoping, I am not getting it as I see a Google holding advert. I have fiddled with the code now to see if it changed by adding meta data and change of title because at one point it was advertising Magic Circle lessons <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>
