Bold text with non-bold underline (2002/SR2)

    Hi -

I forgot how to achieve having bolded text with non-bold underline.

    Thanks!

I tried several fonts and font sizes, but I don't see any difference between the underline of bold text and that of non-bold text. Could you attach a document demonstrating the problem you have, or else a screenshot?

Hans - Attached is a wee sample. To be clear: what I am after is for the text to be bold, but the underline Not bold.

Thanks for looking at the attached,

Sorry, I didn't look carefully enough - as soon as more than a few characters in the text are bold, the underline becomes bold. I don't think you can do anything about this behavior.

    Workarounds:
    - Use a paragraph border instead of underline. This will apply to the entire paragraph, however, not just to the text.
    - Put the text in a table cell just wide enough to fit the text, and add a cell border instead of underline. See the attached version.

Re: Bold text with non-bold underline (2002/SR2)

    Thank you, Hans.

The text is already in a table. Additional problem is that some text on same line should be bold, remainder, not and since there are many elements in the table, I don't want to have additional split cells....

I'll play around with border settings some more.

    Appreciate your help,
    Acer

I fear that what you want is not possible with underlining or borders (and I'm not sure it would be desirable - a line of text whose underlining is partly bold and partly not bold looks weird to me).
You could simulate various types of underlining by placing line segments (from the Drawing toolbar) under the text, but that would be a nightmare to maintain.

Yes, I agree. We don't need any self-imposed nightmares, do we?

Thanks, as always, for your input.

    Hi Acer,

If you really need to do this, you could use an EQ field coded like:
    {EQ X bo(The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.)}

    To create such a field:
. press Ctrl-F9 to create the field braces (ie '{ }')
. type 'EQ X bo()' within the field braces, leaving no spaces either end
. copy & space your mixed bold/non-bold text, without underlining, into the field between the parenteses.
Note: the text cannot span more than one line.
    Cheers,

Thanks, Macropod. Sounds worth experimenting with IF different people wouldn't be working on the document after my portion of the edit process. With so many hands involved in the documents we work on, we try to stick to the uncomplicated.

You could try using a font like "Lucida Sans" . With the (Windows 2000) version that I've got here, the underlining on bold text and non-bold text seems to be the same (and also the same as what I get with underlining on non-bold text using "Arial" or "Times New Roman").
