    Dreamweaver 8 synchronize sites problem

I have a question which would be trivial to someone who maintains websites with Dreamweaver 8 (Yet Another Non-Intuitive Program...).

I am trying to synchronise a remote site with a local site, and am following the procedure on the Help file. However, when the Preview command finishes, I expect a window (the Synchronize Dialog box?) to come up to tell me which files should be downloaded, however it just flashes before my eyes, and disappears. I cannot find it hiding anywhere.

    Any retrieval suggestions, please?

    thanks

Re: Dreamweaver 8 synchronize sites problem

    Hi John

If anything I would ditch the Dreamweaver FTP utility in DW8 and any other DW product.....Once you have set up the site through Manage Sites it is (as you quite rightly say) not very intuitive. As I have always got very confused with the option of Put and Get; I often feel I am doing FTP in the dark!

If you want my honest opinion, don't use that utility and go for my now new friend (we lost contact for a little while) Filezilla

Third party FTP programmes are much more user friendly with a File Explorer feel and drag and drop capability.

If not, I will hunt through some old teaching notes and try and find an old hands on exercise.

Re: Dreamweaver 8 synchronize sites problem

Your suggestion is especially apposite because I have been looking for a practical method of downloading the "remote" website for backup purposes on a schedulable basis!

My only query is whether Filezilla can compare the local and remote websites, and only download from the remote that which is newer than the local. (We have the unusual situation of maintaining the remote files via Contribute 3, so it tends to be the local website which is out-of-date compared with the remote=live one!).

    Thanks

Yes it can. In the Transfer menu, there's a "File overwrite settings" submenu, from which you can select "Overwrite if newer". (The default setting is "prompt", which does what it says on the tin).

Re: Dreamweaver 8 synchronize sites problem

I have never gone that deep into the functionality of the software, I have not got it loaded on my work laptop as it would be useless due to the firewall settings.

I would think that the only real way to do this is to do a visual file compare otherwise I would suggest a business process needs to be implemented ( I am draconian when it comes to this as I am the Configuration manager for my system) that requires that all changed or updated filenames have to be appended with YYMMDD suffixes.

I always back up my site with FTP to my local site even though I have a dev/test area as I have a database in part of the back end...I hope that helps

Re: Dreamweaver 8 synchronize sites problem

Having just been onto the FileZilla website, I am immediately struck by the fact that there is a client edition and a server edition. Can I just get away with just the client edition on my PC (and nothing at the web-host?)...

    Thanks

Yes, as long as you have the various rights and priviledges, which sounds as though you do.

If you come across your Kiddie's Guide to FileZilla Client, I'd be interested!

Thanks, Jerry, I will read through it with enthusiasm.

Of course when I tried the Dreamweaver Site Synchronise again yesterday morning, it worked entirely as expected. Annoying things, computers...
