Statement

Jezza Bears computer went hay wire today and started print lines of data

There is one true statement on this printout
There are two true statements on this printout
There are three true statements on this printout
There are four true statements on this printout
There are five true statements on this printout
There are six true statements on this printout
There are seven true statements on this printout
There are eight true statements on this printout
There are nine true statements on this printout
There are ten true statements on this printout

Which statement is true?

Have a [choccy bar] for the first answer...

For some reason I am not too comfortable with the second although I know what you mean. Just a feeling

Re: Statement

I figured there are really a total of 10 true statements on the printout because obviously there is more than 1, more than 2, more than 3, etc. so the 10th statement is the only true statement on the printout!

Re: Statement

Oh good, a puzzle that has started a debate, I do love it when we disagree with an answer

I tell you why I feel uncomfortable with your answer ( as I did with Stuart's)

In my opinion, in this type of logic puzzle you have to accept that each premise is a true statement of fact, similar to the syllogism:

All chefs are violinists.
Mary is a chef.
Is Mary a violinist?

Two facts and a deduction..... this is true.

I see the list created by JB's printer defined premises each is true, therefore if the statement says "There are two true statements on this printout" we must (or should) deduct that the other 8 are false.

Now I would agree with you if the statements started "There areat least two true statements on this printout" etc

Therefore, I don't agree (and I maybe proved wrong by the logicians) with your answer as to be correct it should have the "at least" inserted into each statement

What do you reckon?

Re: Statement

This is why such terminology is avoided in mathematical parlance, particularly probability - the ambuguity. You'll often see "exactly one", "at least one" and "one and only one", but not simply "one". I guess it's the same situation with "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth"... otherwise there'd be no perjury charges, provided you gave your correct name for instance... then you could lie about all the rest

I guess it's the same situation with "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth"...

This statement always bothers me when the witness is required to only answer yes or no with no explanation. If the witness is required to tell "the whole truth" then a Yes/No answer may not be enough

My point exactly.

But to answer your question:
No I do not. I only wear the fishnets with low heels.
I wear the high heels to show off my legs and wear no stockings with them

Re: Statement

I simply see the results of what you have printed out - I do have to revise my answer. So here goes Skitterbug's logic - Since there are a total of 10 statements on the printout - not just one or two, etc. - I feel that #10 is the only true statement.............. And you know what? As I muddle through my "logical thinking #1 can only be the true answer because there is only one true answer that is within the ten statements and we know that there can't be 10 true answers since 3 is more than 2, and 4 is more than 3, etc. ....... so the right answer is #1......where's my ....... no wonder lawyers and courts stick to just the simple yes/no answers.......

Now what's this about fishnet hose and heels.......I've got to keep on reading this thread.........
